ZAMBIA POLICE SERVICE REAFFIRMS COMMITMENT TO GOVERNMENT POLICIES AND GENDER EQUALITY

Pretoria – Tuesday, 11.03.25
Zambia Police Service Commissioner for Administration, Susan Malundu, has reaffirmed the Service’s commitment to implementing government policies that foster national development and regional security cooperation, in line with Zambia’s foreign policy pillars of Peace, Security and Stability and Economic Diplomacy.
Speaking at the Regional Women Network Champions workshop in South Africa, attended by women leaders from law enforcement agencies, Commissioner Malundu emphasized the Zambia Police Service’s ongoing efforts to promote gender equality and strengthen border management and security. She highlighted Zambia’s progress in appointing women to key leadership positions, ensuring a diverse and competent approach to law enforcement and regional security.
“Our strategy integrates gender equality across all facets of Zambian society, reinforcing the government’s vision of inclusive governance and sustainable peace,” she stated.
A key focus of the workshop was the 2021–2025 Women’s Network Sub-Committee Strategic Plan, which prioritizes capacity-building for women in law enforcement to enhance leadership and operational effectiveness. The initiative aligns with Zambia’s commitment to regional and international best practices in security cooperation and gender mainstreaming.
The workshop convened stakeholders to address policy, programming, and operational challenges affecting women in law enforcement. Commissioner Malundu stressed its significance in equipping women officers with leadership skills to address gender imbalances, promote harm reduction, and contribute to regional security.
“By fostering a collaborative network, women officers can collectively develop strategies to tackle systemic issues, further strengthening regional security frameworks,” she added. She also commended the Southern African Regional Police Chiefs Cooperation Organisation (SARPCCO) for its continued support of INTERPOL and SARPCCO ideals, acknowledging member states’ unwavering commitment to regional peace and security.
Chief Investigations Officer at the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), Inutu Maureen Soonga, expressed gratitude to the Zambian government for sponsoring her participation in the workshop, which focused on integrating gender perspectives into harm reduction strategies.
Ms. Soonga described the event as an opportunity to amplify the voices of women and gender minorities, fostering sustainable solutions for policing challenges. “This platform has strengthened the capacity of women officers through knowledge exchange and stakeholder engagement, ultimately enhancing regional security efforts,” she said.
SARPCCO reaffirmed its appreciation for member states’ continued dedication to advancing regional policing objectives in alignment with INTERPOL frameworks, underscoring Zambia’s commitment to fostering peace, security, and stability in Southern Africa.
